The role of the Finance Director is as much about strategy as it is about book keeping. Finance Directors advise the board of the directors about investments and other financial activities, providing insight into risks and returns, and bringing tax and regulatory concerns to the attention of the board. Typically a Finance Director will have several years of management experience in larger organisations and be a qualified member of an appropriate body such as the ICAEW (Institute of chartered accountants in England and Wales).
